Task task based planner supports Kanban development by allowing you to set Work In Progress (WIP) limits and giving you alerts if you and your team have exceeded those limits.
To configure the story/task statuses, open up the Release Properties dialog from the toolbar, and navigate to either the "Story Status" page or the "Task Status" page.

The status column with the exceeded WIP limit will be highlighted in either red (over the limit) or yellow (under the limit). A message will appear below the column label, indicating the amount of stories/tasks that exceed the limit. You may open the Release Properties dialog by clicking on the message to review your settings.

In the Release Planner, if any of WIP limits is exceeded for the active sprint, a warning icon will be displayed in the “Status” column of the sprint.

The task based planner also supports setting a sub-status for stories. Depending on your development process, you may benefit from having an visual indication on whether a story is ready to be pulled to the next status column.
To set the column status, go to the Story Board and click on the empty space to the right/left of the story cards. The story card will then be shifted within the column to reflect the updated column status.
